Wookiee Life Day is upon us!
The first annual World Wide Wookiee Life Day is scheduled for this November 17, the 31st anniversary of The Star Wars Holiday Special. Everyone is encouraged to gather with their closest friends and family to watch The Star Wars Holiday Special. What is really going to make this a great event are Snuggies! Yes, you may have noticed the Wookiees in the holiday special wearing their red Snuggies for life day. Well finally Earth technology is at the point where we are able to successfully replicate this Wookiee technology. Kick off the holiday season right and "celebrate a day of peace, a day of harmony. "
So in brief:

Freddy vs. Jason
Directed by Ronny Yu
Released August 15, 2003
Freddy vs. Jason was released almost 10 years to the day after Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday in which a confrontation between Freddy and Jason was first teased on film. (At the end of the movie Jason's mask is pulled down to hell by Freddy's glove.) Ever since this scene FVJ remained in developmental hell, seeing countless scripts and creative teams which actually started making the rounds in 1987! Once the movie actually saw fruition in managed to please my inner 11 year old, as well as my 21 year old self. It really captured the spirit of the old Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th films of 1980's.
Unfortunately Freddy vs. Jason appears to be the last installment in the original chronology for both the Nightmare and Friday series. Each series' next film was a remake/reboot. What I wouldn't give to see Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash!

Southland Tales
Directed by Richard Kelly
Released November 14, 2007 (May 21, 2006 Cannes Film Festival)
Another example of a brilliant new director having their second film be a huge flop, Richard Kelly's follow up to Donnie Darko was a disappointment on many levels. While it isn't a terrible film, it suffers from having an abstract and confusing plot magnified by the fact that the story relies on content outside of the movie:
Southland Tales was initially planned to be a nine-part "interactive experience", with the first six parts published in six 100-page graphic novels that would be released in a six-month period up to the film's release. The feature film comprises the final three parts of the experience. A website was also developed to intertwine with the graphic novels and the film itself. The idea of six graphic novels was later narrowed down to three. The novels were written by Kelly and illustrated by Brett Weldele.Southland Tales grossed $275,380 in limited release at the North American box office, and $81,028 elsewhere, making a worldwide total of $356,408, falling far short of the film's $15–17 million budget. It should be noted that this was with the film playing on only 63 screens (a standard art house release is 300 screens).

And now for something completely different...
Collateral Damage
Directed by Andrew Davis
Released February 8, 2002
This was Arnold's last starring role in an original property before becoming The Governator. (Terminator 3, a sequel, came out the next year, and he only had minor roles in The Rundown and Around the World in 80 Days.) Collateral Damage was originally intended to be released on October 5, 2001 but was postponed because of the 9/11 attacks. In the film Arnold plays a firefighter who's family is killed by terrorists and goes on a vigilante revenge mission. Very original, I know.

V For Vendetta
Directed by James McTeigue
Released March 17, 2006
"Remember, Remember the 5th of November." V for Vendetta was originally scheduled for release on the weekend of November 5, 2005, the 400th anniversary of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, with the tag line taken from a traditional British rhyme memorialising the event. However, the marketing angle lost much of its value when the release date was pushed back to March 17, 2006. Still, it was a pretty great movie in my book, although I ashamedly have never read to original comic book written by the crazy British mountain man Alan Moore.
V for Vendetta is also responsible for giving Natalie Portman a controversial new hairdo, which in turn spawned the Seattle-based band Natalie Portman's Shaved Head.

1408
Directed by Mikael Håfström
Released June 22, 2007
I got the DVD of 1408 earlier this year but didn't watch it until a few weeks ago for some unofficial Month of Macabre viewing. Many of my friends have been raving about how good it is since it was released. It definitely is a solid Stephen King horror story, but not the scariest or best thing around. It's way better than most of the horror movie garbage from this decade, though!
Be sure to check out the 2-Disc Collector's Edition that includes the 104 minute Theatrical cut as well as the 112 minute Director's cut with an alternate ending. (I actually have an extra brand new copy of this, so contact me if you want it for free. Just pay shipping or trade for something.)

Zombieland
Directed by Ruben Fleischer
Released October 2, 2009
Truly epic and hilarious. Zombieland was actually developed as a TV series several years ago. The creators have stated they had about the whole first season planned out, and the ideas from these episodes could potentially be used for sequels. Most parties involved have stated interest in revisiting the Zombieland universe, and I certainly can't wait to go back!

Planet Terror
Directed by Robert Rodriguez
Released April 6, 2007
This movie rocks so hard. It perfectly captures everything campy and awesome about low-budget 1980's zombie flicks. Bruce Willis is in it too! If you saw it in theaters as part of the Grindhouse double feature, consider yourself lucky. It was a box office flop in the US and it was subsequently split into two separate releases overseas. Rodriguez is currently filming a feature length version of Machete, his fake trailer in Grindhouse, but it will be a solo release and not part of Grindhouse 2.
A Decade of Movies #18
Land of the Dead
Directed by George A. Romero
Released June 24, 2005
Romero's first zombie film in 20 years continued the trend that each installment of his Dead series is to be worse than the previous one. It's a decent zombie movie, but pales in comparison to the greatness of Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead...and there's lots of terrible CG blood splatter.

Black Metal Chewbacca Tattoo!
OMG This is even better than the Black Metal Millhouse tattoo! I love the subtlety of the black metal touches, from the black eyes and lips to the upside-down cross necklace and bullet belt bandolier.

The Classic 1980's Ninja Turtles are Back!?
TURTLES FOREVER will see the modern day Ninja Turtles teaming up with their campier versions of yesteryear. I like how they incorporate the classic turtles into the modern mythology through the use of alternate dimensions, but I really wish they could have used the original voice actors!

A Decade of Movies #12
Scooby-Doo
Directed by Roja Gosnell
Released June 14, 2002
Good: Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks) as Velma.
Bad: Terrible looking CG creatures, Sugar Ray, Frosted Tips, "Let's Get Jinkie With It," Scrappy?
Thoughts: If you're dumb enough to view this as a normal movie, it is a terrible experience. But if you can view it as a live action cartoon, or laugh at how awful it is, it is mildly enjoyable.
Drinking Game Ideas: A 40oz of malt liqour and some scooby snacks.
Fun Fact: Reggae artist Shaggy and rock group MXPX perform different versions of the Scooby-Doo theme song in the movie. Shaggy got his stage name from the show's character.

A Decade of Movies #11
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Directed by Dave Filoni
Released August 15, 2008
Good: Jedi, Stinky the Hutt, lightsabers, old school Saturday morning style action/adventure and fun, outer space, Anakin as a likeable character, Ziro fhe Hutt, Ashoka's trashy tubetop.
Bad: The first 4 episodes of a cartoon being turned into a theatrical release.
Thoughts: I really like this movie. It's tone feels more like the original Star Wars movies than most of the prequels do to me. Star Wars: The Clone Wars is essentially the pilot to The Clone Wars animated series. George Lucas decided to release it in theaters to build up hype for the show, and probably to get people to pay for what would normally be free on television. Unfortunately most critics hated it, judging it as another Star Wars movie and not a serialized cartoon.
Drinking Game Ideas: Take a shot of whatever you choose whenever Ahsoka gets "snippy." Chase it with blue milk.
Fun Fact: Star Wars: The Clone Wars is the seventh Star Wars feature to be released in theaters in North America (the eighth in Europe, as Caravan of Courage received a cinematic release there in 1984) and is the first animated theatrical film for the franchise, and the first to be distributed by Warner Bros. instead of 20th Century Fox.

The Matrix Reloaded
Directed by The Wachowski Brothers
Released May 15th, 2003
Good: The car chase.
Bad: The rest of the movie.
Thoughts: For me this was the decade's first truly epic fail for a highly anticipated sequel. (I wasn't expecting Jurassic Park III to be good, and as a hardcore Star Wars fan I saw good in Episode II.)
Drinking Game Ideas: Get crunk during the rave scene.
Fun Fact: This MTV Movie Awards skit featuring Will Ferrell is better than the actual movie:

A Decade of Movies #9
Dance of the Dead
Directed by Gregg Bishop
Released October 13, 2008
Good: High school teen comedy + zombies = 'nuff said.
Bad: It could have been way more epic with a big budget.
Thoughts: This is the best Straight-to-DVD horror movie of the decade, which isn't saying much, but it could have been a major theatrical release. It really captures the tone of all the fun 1980's horror movies!
Drinking Game Ideas: Drink to every zombie kill!
Fun Fact: The film had a limited theatrical release at Mann's Chinese 6 Theatres on 13 October 2008, one day before being released on DVD.

A Decade of Movies #8
Brick
Directed by Rian Johnson
Released April 7, 2006
Good: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emilie de Ravin (LOST), genre mash-up (see below).
Bad: Sometimes the old school hardboiled detective dialogue seems a bit over the top.
Thoughts: Brick is a very interesting mash-up of hardboiled detective/noir films and high school teen movies. It's not the greatest thing ever, and seems a bit awkward at times, but it is good and I appreciate it's originality.
Drinking Game Ideas: Sip scotch on the rocks throughout.
Fun Fact: In the United States Brick opened in 2 theaters. That's right, 2.

A Decade of Movies #7
Charlie's Angels
Directed by McG
Released October 22, 2000
Good: Bill Murray? Crispin Glove? Not really. Umm, there's some PG-13 T&A.
Bad: Having a movie directed by someone who should be a McDonald's value menu item.
Thoughts: This movie sucks. If you can't laugh at stupid movies don't even try this one.
Drinking Game Ideas: Just get drunk. Whatever you do just get drunk. As soon as possible to maximize enjoyment of the movie.
Fun Fact: Drew Barrymore doesn't know how to moonwalk and used to be married to Tom Green, who is also in this movie.
It's a Wonderful Day for Pie
