Movie of the Day: Interstella 5555

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (2003)

Daft Punk's animated feature done with Toei Animation. There's no dialogue and very few sound effects so it's pretty much just their album Discovery set to a rockin' retro style Anime story.

Movie of the Day: Passengers

Passengers (2008)

The movie that some people said ripped off LOST... but in some ways LOST ended up ripping it off!

Movie of the Day: Gentlemen Broncos

Gentlemen Broncos (2009)

Apparently this movie sucks so much that it's theatrical release was cancelled. Fortunately the critics are not always right. I really enjoyed watching the movie, as it feels like much more like a spiritual sequel to Napoleon Dynamite over Nacho Libre. It takes place in the same bizarro universe as Napoleon Dynamite, with just as many weird (if not weirder) characters. It has many 'Tim and Eric' sensibilities, plus a heaping dose of awesomely bad sci-fi/fantasy segments akin to low budget turds from the 70's and 80's. Gentlemen Broncos was released on DVD and Blu-ray today.

Movie of the Day: The Men Who Stare at Goats

The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009)

According to Rotten Tomatoes and Flixter only about 50% of movie goers like this movie. Sure, the last act of the movie is it's weakest, but the the rest of the film has some really funny stuff and I dug the story too (not to mention some great actors).

If you're a Star Wars nerd you should get a kick out of it!

Drinking Game idea: Take a shot every time someone says "Jedi." You might make it 'til the end of the movie.

Update: Out of the movies I've recently watched this is the third to come from 2009 and feature George Clooney. Hmm.

Movie of the Day: Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

In a decade full of crappy computer animated movies starring talking animals, Wes Anderson shines above them all with his stop-motion animated movie based on Roald Dahl's classic children's book.

Movie of the Day: Extract

Extract (2009)

Kind of like Office Space, but without all the comedy. It's not bad, but isn't anything to write home about either. Sort of like a normal episode of King of the Hill.

A Decade of Movies #37

Freddy vs. Jason
Directed by Ronny Yu
Released August 15, 2003

Freddy vs. Jason was released almost 10 years to the day after Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday in which a confrontation between Freddy and Jason was first teased on film. (At the end of the movie Jason's mask is pulled down to hell by Freddy's glove.) Ever since this scene FVJ remained in developmental hell, seeing countless scripts and creative teams which actually started making the rounds in 1987! Once the movie actually saw fruition in managed to please my inner 11 year old, as well as my 21 year old self. It really captured the spirit of the old Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th films of 1980's.

Unfortunately Freddy vs. Jason appears to be the last installment in the original chronology for both the Nightmare and Friday series. Each series' next film was a remake/reboot. What I wouldn't give to see Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash!

A Decade of Movies #36

Orange County
Directed by Jake Kasdan
Released January 14, 2002

A very solid and fun teen/college comedy in the tradition of countless other campy classics! And OMG it's Tom Hanks' son!
