Movie of the Day: Assault on Precinct 13
Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)
John Carpenter rocks the synthesizers nice and smooth-like on this one.

Movie of the Day: Being John Malkovich
Being John Malkovich (1999)
Spike Jonze's first feature is still my favorite. This is one of my many DVD's that has gone missing after having all kinds of different roommates in various locations. Fortunately I recently picked it up on the dead format of HD DVD for dirt cheap (after I got an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player for cheaps too). It has yet to be released on Blu-ray.

Movie of the Day: Zardoz
Zardoz (1974)
This has some of the most batshit crazy stuff I've ever seen in a movie. It's awesome. Just look at Sean Connery's bondage/Vampirella/baby diaper costume:

Movie of the Day: The Men Who Stare at Goats
The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009)
According to Rotten Tomatoes and Flixter only about 50% of movie goers like this movie. Sure, the last act of the movie is it's weakest, but the the rest of the film has some really funny stuff and I dug the story too (not to mention some great actors).
If you're a Star Wars nerd you should get a kick out of it!

Drinking Game idea: Take a shot every time someone says "Jedi." You might make it 'til the end of the movie.
Update: Out of the movies I've recently watched this is the third to come from 2009 and feature George Clooney. Hmm.

Movie of the Day: Fantastic Mr. Fox
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
In a decade full of crappy computer animated movies starring talking animals, Wes Anderson shines above them all with his stop-motion animated movie based on Roald Dahl's classic children's book.

Pee-Wee's Playhouse Live: The First 3 Minutes (Dress Rehearsal)!
Oh My God. It's just like the show! I'm going to the final night February 7th AND get to do a meet and greet with everyone!
Movie of the Day: The 'Burbs
The 'Burbs (1989)
One of my absolute favorite movies. This was my first DVD purchase along with The Lost Boys in 1999. It's hard to believe it was almost 11 years ago when I started my big 80's nostalgia kick. The party continued when I started college in the fall of 2000 and founded 'The 80's Club.' It basically consisted of watching different 80's movies with big groups of people in my dorm. I remember faculty commenting on how this made them feel old. Today, somewhere a kid is probably doing the same thing with 'The 90's Club.' Now I feel old!

Movie of the Day: World's Greatest Dad
World's Greatest Dad (2009)
Who would have thought Bobcat Goldthwait would end up being a pretty good director?
The Numbers? (LOST)
First off, I don't really consider this a spoiler. Apparently each of "The Numbers" represent a different Lostie. Although this is huge news in the fact that the number will probably have some significants in season 6, as usual we still have no idea what this new information means.
If you are a reader of this blog and are super pissed because you consider this image a spoiler - please tell me. In the future I'll hide stuff behind cuts. But I don't think my few readers will mind...

Movie of the Day: Young Sherlock Holmes
Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)
An often forgotten film, it featured The Goonies team of Steven Spielberg as producer and Chris Columbus as writer. It is notable for featuring the first fully computer-generated character, a knight composed of elements from a stained glass window. The effect was created by Lucasfilm's John Lasseter (now chief creative officer at Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios) before Pixar was sold the next year. Lasseter would go on to create Toy Story 10 years later.

Movie of the Day: Sunset Boulevard
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
One of my favorite classic noir films. In 1989, Sunset Boulevard was among the first group of 25 deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Movie of the Day: Russkies
Russkies (1987)
Cold War Goonies with lil' Joaquin Phoenix and Ralphie from A Christmas Story!
Watching it today inspired me to make a new tumblr:
LOST Sticker Designs by FETTS
I whipped up some rough designs for LOST stickers. I'd like to have them for the Sunset on the Beach premiere on the 30th in Honolulu. If you know of a good, fast, and cheap sticker printer let me know! (StickerGuy might not be able to get them done in time.
This rough LockeBusters design I'd like to do as a button, with a nice old smokey background.

Movie of the Day: Before Sunrise
Before Sunrise (1995)
Richard Linklater's minimalist masterpiece. This mother has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The main characters later appeared in Linklater's Waking Life (2001) and a direct sequel Before Sunset (2004).

Movie of the Day: Extract
Extract (2009)
Kind of like Office Space, but without all the comedy. It's not bad, but isn't anything to write home about either. Sort of like a normal episode of King of the Hill.

Movie of the Day: 2010: The Year We Make Contact
So I kind of stopped doing Movie of the Day/Decade posts in November. For the new year I hereby resolve to keep up on movie posts! If nothing else, just to keep a log of movies I've been watching. And I still plan to do some posts with my favorite movies of the last decade...
Anyways, I decided to make 2010 my first movie of 2010. (No one cares that the decade doesn't "actually" start until 2011.)

2010 (1984)
My favorite scene from the film is during the aerobrake sequence when American Heywood Floyd (Roy Scheider) and Russian Irina Yakunina (Natasha Schneider) embrace each other in the face of possible doom. Remember, this was filmed during the Cold War. They just didn't foresee it being over in the year 2010.
Below is the whole aerobrake sequence, although it looks terrible. The Blu-ray looks great, though!
