A Decade of Movies #25

Dead Girl
Directed by Marcel Sarmiento, Gadi Harel
Released September 8, 2008

One of the many low budget horror movies of the decade that is a great concept and has so much potential, but falls just short of greatness. And yeah, the poster is supposed to remind you of a vagina.

A Decade of Movies #24

Undead
Directed by Michael Spierig, Peter Spierig
Released 2003

I saw this when it came out on DVD in 2005 I don't really remember anything about it. It has a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 73 reviews, so I'm guessing it isn't very good.

A Decade of Movies #23

Zombie Honeymoon
Directed by David Gebroe
Released 2004

This movie isn't a total crapfest like Zombie Strippers, but it ain' no Shaun of the Dead either! Worth a watch if you heart zombies.

A Decade of Movies #22

Zombie Strippers
Directed by Jay Lee
Released April 18, 2008

This movie sucks, but it's called Zombie Strippers so you gotta watch it.

A Decade of Movies #21

Shaun of the Dead
Directed by Edgar Wright
Released April 9, 2004 (UK)

Not just an incredible zombie movie, but an all around fantastic film in general. Shaun of the Dead is funny, smart, emotional, and scary. It holds it's own as the original and greatest example of "A Romantic Comedy, with Zombies."

A Decade of Movies #20

The Dead Outside
Directed by Kerry Anne Mullaney
Released August 25, 2008 (UK)

This Scottish zombie film has had no official wide release yet. It looks interesting.

A Decade of Movies #19

Planet Terror
Directed by Robert Rodriguez
Released April 6, 2007

This movie rocks so hard. It perfectly captures everything campy and awesome about low-budget 1980's zombie flicks. Bruce Willis is in it too! If you saw it in theaters as part of the Grindhouse double feature, consider yourself lucky. It was a box office flop in the US and it was subsequently split into two separate releases overseas. Rodriguez is currently filming a feature length version of Machete, his fake trailer in Grindhouse, but it will be a solo release and not part of Grindhouse 2.

A Decade of Movies #18

Land of the Dead
Directed by George A. Romero
Released June 24, 2005

Romero's first zombie film in 20 years continued the trend that each installment of his Dead series is to be worse than the previous one. It's a decent zombie movie, but pales in comparison to the greatness of Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead...and there's lots of terrible CG blood splatter.

Drunk Ewok on Live TV - Fights, Moonwalks, Humps Ground!

God Bless America.

A Decade of Movies #17

Dawn of the Dead
Directed Zack Snyder
Released March 15, 2004

In my opinion this is the best of the decade's onslaught of (mostly) terrible horror film remakes. The directorial debut of Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) made use of the 2000's more "extreme" olympic runner zombies seen in 28 Days Later.

A Decade of Movies #16

28 Days Later
Directed by Danny Boyle
Released November 1, 2002 (UK)

I haven't done the research, but I was just thinking about when the 2000's new breed of fast zombies were introduced. Was it 28 Days Later? I can't think of an earlier example off the top of my head. Anyways, this movie rocks.

A Decade of Movies #15

Resident Evil
Directed by Paul Anderson
Released March 15, 2002

This movie sucks, but zombie movies are just like pizza in the fact that even when they're bad they're good.

A Decade of Movies #14

Outpost
Directed by Steve Barker
Released March 11, 2008

Outpost is a pretty original British nazi-zombie movie starring Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone). Unfortunately it isn't the most exciting thing around. Recommended only for hardcore genre fans.

A Decade of Movies #13

Fido
Directed by Andrew Currie
Released June 15, 2007 (USA)

Not only has this decade had it's share of great zombie flicks, but it's birthed the sub-genre of Zombie Comedy! Fido is one of the best 'Zom-Coms' of the handful released since Shaun of the Dead. Think Frankenweenie but with a zombie.

Black Metal Chewbacca Tattoo!

OMG This is even better than the Black Metal Millhouse tattoo! I love the subtlety of the black metal touches, from the black eyes and lips to the upside-down cross necklace and bullet belt bandolier.

The Classic 1980's Ninja Turtles are Back!?

TURTLES FOREVER will see the modern day Ninja Turtles teaming up with their campier versions of yesteryear. I like how they incorporate the classic turtles into the modern mythology through the use of alternate dimensions, but I really wish they could have used the original voice actors!

A Decade of Movies #12

Scooby-Doo
Directed by Roja Gosnell
Released June 14, 2002

Good: Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks) as Velma.

Bad: Terrible looking CG creatures, Sugar Ray, Frosted Tips, "Let's Get Jinkie With It," Scrappy?

Thoughts: If you're dumb enough to view this as a normal movie, it is a terrible experience. But if you can view it as a live action cartoon, or laugh at how awful it is, it is mildly enjoyable.

Drinking Game Ideas: A 40oz of malt liqour and some scooby snacks.

Fun Fact: Reggae artist Shaggy and rock group MXPX perform different versions of the Scooby-Doo theme song in the movie. Shaggy got his stage name from the show's character.

A Decade of Movies #11

Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Directed by Dave Filoni
Released August 15, 2008

Good: Jedi, Stinky the Hutt, lightsabers, old school Saturday morning style action/adventure and fun, outer space, Anakin as a likeable character, Ziro fhe Hutt, Ashoka's trashy tubetop.

Bad: The first 4 episodes of a cartoon being turned into a theatrical release.

Thoughts: I really like this movie. It's tone feels more like the original Star Wars movies than most of the prequels do to me. Star Wars: The Clone Wars is essentially the pilot to The Clone Wars animated series. George Lucas decided to release it in theaters to build up hype for the show, and probably to get people to pay for what would normally be free on television. Unfortunately most critics hated it, judging it as another Star Wars movie and not a serialized cartoon.

Drinking Game Ideas: Take a shot of whatever you choose whenever Ahsoka gets "snippy." Chase it with blue milk.

Fun Fact: Star Wars: The Clone Wars is the seventh Star Wars feature to be released in theaters in North America (the eighth in Europe, as Caravan of Courage received a cinematic release there in 1984) and is the first animated theatrical film for the franchise, and the first to be distributed by Warner Bros. instead of 20th Century Fox.

A Decade of Movies #10

The Matrix Reloaded
Directed by The Wachowski Brothers
Released May 15th, 2003

Good: The car chase.

Bad: The rest of the movie.

Thoughts: For me this was the decade's first truly epic fail for a highly anticipated sequel. (I wasn't expecting Jurassic Park III to be good, and as a hardcore Star Wars fan I saw good in Episode II.)

Drinking Game Ideas: Get crunk during the rave scene.

Fun Fact: This MTV Movie Awards skit featuring Will Ferrell is better than the actual movie:

TERMINATOR / BACK TO THE FUTURE

OMG THIS IS AWESOME!
